Why staff induction in boarding is so important

The induction into boarding is different to most other employee inductions. This is because your new employee will be looking after other people’s children and needs to provide an acceptable level of care for children, whose duty of care has been entrusted to your boarding residence. There is a lot at stake when you entrust a new, largely unknown person with your organisation’s duty of care. This means:
1. Your employee screening processes must be exhaustive! You must do your due diligence to ensure that the person entering your boarding team has the right character, credentials and history to be caring for young people entrusted to your care.
2. Your induction must be comprehensive and very thorough. This means that before the new employee commences caring for boarders, they must:
• be aware of the crucial parts of their duty of care
• receive some essential training, and
• evidence a level of skill and competence for the role.

Heads of Boarding need to keep in mind, that if employee screening and induction is not carried out correctly, and as a result, harm occurs to the employee or to a young person in
their care, the organisation is legally liable. Your induction is also a key to retaining staff – high staff turnover can often be linked back to a poor induction process.

The processes that should occur when a person is accepted for employment are set out in the attached checklist.

The purpose of the Boarding Induction process is to:
• Set the tone as employees embrace the ethos of the organisation
• Set up new employees to be successful in the role
• Set up new employees to be safe
• Prepare new employees to care for other people’s children
• Ensure that the new employee can provide the level of care required

The following Checklist is for a preliminary induction – an initial induction process before the new employee commences working on their own in boarding. Induction will continue after the employee has commenced with more training and support.
This preliminary induction process includes:
1. Preparation prior to the employees first day
2. Initial meeting – first day
3. Essential training
4. Workplace Health and Safety induction
5. Vehicle use
6. Shadow shifts

Every boarding context is different. To use this checklist, you should adjust the list to ensure that it meets the unique needs of your boarding context.
